To Sit Or To Stand

To sit or to stand? Before we write a single word, we’ve already made this decision. But what do you prefer? What if you like both? Sometimes, I find myself filled with energy and ready to write while standing on the balls of my feet. Other times, I want to settle into the comfort of a good chair and lazily peck at the keyboard. I do wonder if either of the two changes my actual writing.

As far as I can tell, the standing method has more to do with my energy levels than my preference. And therefore, if I am more energized to write, it means I have an idea coursing through I feel needs to get out. So, I would think that my best writing flows when I stand. But what if my mood changes or my energy levels fade? What if I want to focus and hone in on one specific aspect of my manuscript? Then, I find myself preferring to sit.

There are plenty of studies that say standing is healthier. And I cannot argue with that. What matters to me is “Where does my best writing occur”? I think it comes during both positions, but it really has more to do with my enthusiasm and energy levels. Maybe standing can help trigger the body and mind into thinking I have more energy. Ultimately, I think both methods have merit. I have a Varidesk that I can adjust up and down at work, and I like that solution.

I find I use both during different parts of the day. Reading and responding to emails and small tasks are great when I stand with my morning coffee. I find myself lowering the desk to do deep research and legal writing. Either way, it is nice to have the option.

It would be great if I could raise and lower my desk at home, but the Varidesk I use in the office doesn’t work at home. The contraption covers an existing desk, making it unusable for anything other than a very heavy monitor stand. I’ve seen and used some great electric ones where the entire desk raises with a button. I like the look and description of the ones from Flexidesk.

I think if I could get one for my office, that is what I would prefer. What do you think? Do any of you have experience with any of these options?
